EU Ambassador in Armenia Piotr Switalski “It is very important that the Corruption Prevention Body is Independent”

Head of the EU Delegation Ambassador Piotr Switalski highlights the idea of creating an independent anti-corruption body. Mr. Switalski said this today at the Europe Day celebration stressing that the body must be independent.

“It is very important that it is independent and is n not directed by anyone. The experience of developed countries shows that such body can be effective if it is independent,” Mr. Switalski said and welcomed the idea, adding that it is a step forward. “But we shall judge about the independence of this body on the actions of this body by its actions and we cannot draw conclusions prematurely.”

Earlier, on Thursday, the Government approved the legislative package on the “Draft Law of the Republic of Armenia on Corruption Prevention and on the Body for Corruption Prevention” and related legal acts. This caused complaints by the members of executive as well. In particular, the representative of the Prosecutor General’s Office said that the summary paper of acceptance or rejection of the proposals by the department had not been submitted. The Chairman of the Central Bank of Armenia and asked to include them in the discussions in future as well.

On the same day the CSOs’ Anti-Corruption Coalition of Armenia issued a statement stressing that the draft had not been discussed in the Anti-Corruption Council of the RA.
