Carl Ulbricht, an Englishman living in Armenia bakes German cookies before the New Year

International expert, Englishman Carl Ulbricht has been living in Armenia for more than a dozen years. He speaks Armenian as a native, even better than many Armenians do. How does the Englishman living in Armenia celebrate New Year? Details in the interview.

– What was the 2016 distinguished with? What achievements did you have this year? Were there any omissions?

– There were no major achievements in the personal aspect. However we did not expect that such progress will be achieved in the sector, I mean the anti-corruption sphere. We made a noticeable progress and hope it will continue related with the illicit enrichment and the creation of the independent anti-corruption body.

– In your opinion, who was the distinguished professional in your sphere this year?

– To be honest, Karen Zadoyan, his dedicated and strategic approach, planning and consistency for realization of the problems

– What surprised you most this year in the legislative system?

– I was surprised to see that the President signed an executive order, according to which, the 2012-2016. Judicial Reform Program was extended by one year. However I see the logic. I see that there is another year that some problems that are not yet settled, will be solved.

– If Santa Claus was a lawyer, what position would you give him?

– I am not a “position provider”.

– Well, according to you, what position he would have.

– Most probably he would have been an investigative lawyer-journalist, because he has a chance to enter the house of each one and see what they have or do not have.

– How and with whom do you celebrate the New Year and Christmas?

– With my family, with my wife and children.

– In fact, New Year is celebrated differently in England, and how do you celebrate it?

– From year to year I am celebrating it according to Armenian traditions. Although I bought the fir-tree on the 24th of December, and decorated it, but the main celebration will be on December 31.

– What are the interesting contrast of British and Armenian cultures? I mean from the aspect of celebrating New Year.

– There, for example, it is interesting that on the eve of the New Year you have to start something new, or stop the wrong things. That is to make a decision that from now and on I shall act differently. I read in the newspaper about 20 different steps that people are made: one began taking cold shower, the other quitted smoking. And they told that their lives were changed. There is a tradition in England that you would think on the eve of the New Year, “Ok I shall not do this any longer.”

– What have you decided?

– I need to go in for more sports more. I feel that this mode of life is wrong.

– Your expectations in 2017

– I want to work effectively. My elder son is in the last year at school, then he would enter the university. At work we start new programs. We have chosen very important sectors and it would be difficult to overcome all obstacles.

– In England, there is a Santa Claus as well. I think you call him differently.

– Yes, “Father Christmas”.

– What did you ask of him in childhood and this year?

– When a child, I asked toys. I loved to play Legos. We had large boxes with different parts of Legos. You were creating something with your imagination. Now, we may ask Father Christmas to give us health, or a little wit to follow our health

– Do you appear as a cook in the kitchen on the occasion of the New Year?

– Yes, there is a tradition in our family, inherited from my father, backing German cookies. I have taken some recipes from my mother and today I shall start backing our German cookies.
