Why do People follow Leaders?

Today, a group of students from the Law Department of Yerevan State Pedagogical University visited Armenian Lawyers’ Association in the scope of professional internship of “We Share” experience exchange program. They met with Mr. Karen Zadoyan, President of the Armenian Lawyers’ Association, Founding member of the USAAA.

Mr. Zadoyan spoke about the evil of corruption, its types and its concept. He stressed the fight against corruption and spoke about the leadership.

Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Lee Kuan Yew: Karen Zadoyan presented biographies of those famous leaders and spoke about their principles.

He focused on the struggle of Martin Luther King. “How does his struggle began? One day when he was returning home after work, he refused to give up his place in the bus to a white man. After this incident he was arrested. All these caused a start of mass boycott of public transport, which was the beginning of the all-American powerful movement against discrimination, injustice and racism, which Martin Luther King led. In 1963, he led a massive march to Washington; where he held his historic speech “I Have a Dream”. In 1964, Martin Luther King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize,” Mr. Zadoyan said.

Karen Zadoyan said that all these leaders had advocated non-violent revolutions. They change states and systems by ideas. “Why do people follow leaders? Have you ever asked this question to yourselves? They do this not for the reason that such people are irreplaceable, but because these people carry on their leaders’ ideas considering those as their own ideas.”

In addition, Mr. Zadoyan referred to the fight against corruption, citing international practice.

At the end the young people played a game of anticorruption values.

Each participant voiced one anti-corruption value that they prefer. Further the group chose three most important values. Those were: the value of not abusing the official position, honesty and equality.
