“No One can give you 10 Thousand Drams and say, -Go and Elect!” Edmon Marukyan at the Anti-Corruption School for Young Leaders

“You are our hope. No one can give you 10 thousand drams and say, -Go and Elect!” Today, Edmon Marukyan Member of the RA National Assembly delivered a lecture on political corruption and the mechanisms of fight against it for the students of Anti-Corruption School for Young Leaders.

The MP spoke how the political field was formed in the newly independent Armenia and what are the legal and illegal ways for financing the political parties. He also referred to the problems that emerge as a result of corruption in the sphere. “Shadow economy, ill political field. The final conclusion is that the small and middle businesses will always be threatened without the rehabilitation political field.”

Mr. Marukyan noted that there are numerous examples of political corruption, for example how the businessmen may be included in the proportional electoral lists for providing money or sponsoring the pre-election foundations; or “rich adoption” laws in the parliament, which are based on their own interests, and there will be no statements on the conflict of interests or no proceedings will be initiated.

AYLA member, Advocate Mariam Zadoyan, delivered a lecture on political financing. She presented the financing sources of the political parties: membership fees, donations, state funds and so on. She spoke about the procedures of formation of the foundations and their financing as well.

The lecturer introduced the international practice as well: Specifically about the standards and limitations that exist in the foreign countries for financing the political parties and their pre-election foundations; procedures for donation and the mechanisms to reveal the financial assets that are not declared and the illegal expenditures.

The Armenian Young Lawyers Association” NGO organize the Anti-Corruption School for Young Leaders in the framework of the U.S. Alumni Outreach Grants Program with financial support of the US Embassy in Armenia.
